SPIRE MODEL

SPIRE MODEL

Dr. Tal Ben Shahar, an internationally acclaimed teacher, best-selling author, and consultant in the areas of happiness and leadership, taught two of the most popular courses in Harvard’s history: Positive Psychology and The Psychology of Leadership. He developed the SPIRE model, a holistic, five-dimensional approach to fostering lifelong learning and promoting a happier, more fulfilling life, grounded in the latest happiness research.

The five dimensions of SPIRE are:

  1. Spiritual well-being: What gives your life purpose and meaning? What values guide your actions?

  2. Physical well-being: How do you nurture and care for your body, recognizing the powerful connection between physical health and mental well-being?

  3. Intellectual well-being: How do you challenge your mind, encourage creativity, and cultivate a love of learning?

  4. Relational well-being: How do you nurture relationships with others and yourself, contributing to and benefiting from the connections around you?

  5. Emotional well-being: How can you enhance positive emotions and build resilience to cope with difficult emotions?

At the Happiness and Wellbeing in Education Conference 2024, we embrace the SPIRE model as a foundation for our approach. Each of our workshops focuses on one of the dimensions of SPIRE. However, because these dimensions are interconnected, you may notice other aspects of the model emerging in the workshops, though they will play a less prominent role.
This holistic integration ensures a more comprehensive understanding of well-being in both personal and professional life.
