Prof. Yong Zhao: Building Personalization of Learning in Schools: Reach for Greatness

Professor Yong Zhao leads participants to consider how to use AI and other tools to develop an education ecosystem for students to personalize their own learning and reach for greatness. Personalization of learning is not just personalization of the learning process. It is much more than allowing and enabling students to control how fast or slow their learning proceeds. It is much more than allowing students to demonstrate their learning in multiple formats. Instead, it is to enable students to have voice and choice in the content they learn and the outcomes they want to reach. Learning is strengths-based and passion-driven.

AI tools such as ChatGPT holds tremendous content across different disciplines and thus provides tremendous potential for students to personalize their learning. This presentation is based on Professor Zhao’s book: Reach for Greatness: Personalizable Education for All Children.

Room G402. Workshop 10

Mr. Martin Skelton: The missing evidence about learning.

Evidence is an integral part of learning. Evidence is what helps us know whether learning has happened or not and, if not, why not. Evidence helps us decide whether to move on to a new struggle or stay a little longer with the existing struggle.

Not all evidence is helpful to learning, though. Some get in the way of learning by taking up too much time, by being unreliable or by being inadequate. In this workshop we’ll be looking at some evidence that is probably the most important evidence of all but which is absent in too many classrooms and schools. In the short time we have together, we’ll be looking at seven key questions that should be at the heart of school leader’s and teacher activity and reflection.
