PARENT CONFERENCE 23 NOV

1. Presentation by Teacher Tom

Speaking With Children So They Can Think

In a very real sense, the language we use creates reality. Teacher Tom speaks about how the specific words we use, and how and when we use them, shape reality for our students for both good and bad.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of being clear and precise in language;

  1. honoring children without commanding or bossing them

  2. using words to create a world of facts and intrinsic motivation

  3. creating space in which children must do their own thinking and make their own decisions

  4. supporting children as they learn from the natural consequences of their behaviors.

As educators we are in the business of learning, knowledge, and intelligence, each of which is a key component of thinking. Yet how much do we actually think about the process of thinking, especially as it pertains to young children?

2. Presentation by Prof. Yong Zhao
The Future of Education and the Future of Your Children

In this presentation, Professor Yong Zhao discusses the changing context of education and diversity of individual students. He will specifically discuss how AI and other technologies are transforming education and how every student must develop their own greatness to thrive in the future. Technology has changed our society, and new technology continues to emerge. Jobs have disappeared and will continue to do so. Industries have been disrupted and will continue to do so.

Quite a lot of knowledge and skills have become obsolete. New possibilities of jobs will come but require different abilities and capacities to translate possibilities into reality. Children are different, each with his or her own strengths and passions. Each child can develop unique greatness and turn that greatness into solutions for others and the world’s problems, creating value for him/herself and others.

This presentation is based on Professor Yong Zhao’s several books: World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students, Learners without Borders: New Pathways for All Students, and Learning for Uncertainty: Teaching Students How to Thrive in a Rapidly Evolving World.

3. Presentation by Dr. Ngo Tuyet Mai
A Shared Transformative Journey of Becoming a Happy Parent

Our children need not only knowledge but love and happiness. They need high levels of wellbeing, and the confidence to become self-directed and socially and emotionally competent. A happy child is a motivated learner, ready to embrace the challenges and wonders of the world.

A successful education thus needs not only knowledgeable parents, teachers and teacher educators but also lovable and happy ones who nurture love and happiness in learners and their learning.

This presentation shares my journey of transforming into a happy mother, teacher and teacher educator in two different environments: Vietnam and Australia, drawing practical lessons for those who prioritize social emotional wellbeing and happiness in parenting and schooling.
