Are students really doing their own work or is it AI?
• How can we design assignments that AI can’t do for students?
• How can we create tasks that genuinely develop critical thinking?
• Are there tools to detect AI-generated student work?
As AI becomes more embedded in daily life, education is facing new challenges and new opportunities.
AI tools are making it easier than ever for students to access information, complete assignments, and explore new knowledge. From personalized language learning apps like ELSA Speak and Duolingo, to smart assistants like Google’s Socratic that help clarify tough questions, AI is quickly becoming a common companion in the learning process.
But with this convenience comes a pressing concern:
What happens when students start relying too heavily on AI to do their work?
It’s becoming increasingly common to see students copy-paste a prompt into an AI tool and submit the generated answer as their own. Take, for example, a simple writing assignment about summer rather than reflecting on their own experiences, students may let AI do the thinking. The result? A well-written paragraph that lacks emotion, authenticity, and the student’s own voice.
This growing reliance on AI can dull students’ independent thinking. Without proper guidance, they risk losing critical skills like reasoning, analysis, and evaluation - skills that are essential in today’s fast-changing world.
💡 So how can educators guide students to think critically in the age of AI?
To explore this question, the Institute for Education and Human Development (EDI) invites TH School and selected guests to join our upcoming workshop: “Fostering Critical Thinking in Students in the Age of AI” with guest speaker Ms. Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Linh, M.A., a specialist in instructional design and AI integration in education.
In this practical and engaging session, Ms. Ngọc Linh will share effective strategies and real-life examples, addressing three key questions:
🔍 How can we design assignments that AI can’t do for students?
Discover creative task formats that require original thinking and meaningful engagement.
🔍 How can we build assignments that actually develop critical thinking?
Learn how to embed analysis, evaluation, comparison, and problem-solving into your teaching.
🔍 Are there tools to detect AI-generated work?
Get up to date with the latest tools and techniques for ensuring academic integrity.
